2017-2018 Graduate Catalog [ARCHIVED CATALOG]

A Message from the President

Welcome to graduate studies at Lipscomb University. Whether you have just finished your undergraduate degree or are already established in your job, you can take your education to the next level with one of the 24 master’s degrees, eight Ed.S. degrees, 23 graduate certificate programs and six dual degrees offered at Lipscomb. Academic programs include doctoral degrees in pharmacy, education and ministry.

Lipscomb University was recently reclassified from a top-ranked regional university to a top-tier doctoral university by the Carnegie Foundation, and thereby placed among an exclusive list of only seven percent of the schools in the nation. Lipscomb is now ranked as a national university in the annual U.S. News & World Report’s “2017 America’s Guide to Colleges.”

Christian Colleges Online ranked Lipscomb No. 2 “Best Christian Colleges and Universities in the South 2017,” and named the university a 2016-17 Christian College of Distinction. It also ranked the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences’ biology program No. 1 in the nation and the College of Entertainment & the Arts visual arts program No. 2 in the nation.

The College of Education is annually recognized by national, state and local sources for its teacher preparation program. The College of Education’s graduate elementary program was ranked No. 14 in the nation by the National Council on Teacher Quality. For the sixth year in a row, data in Tennessee’s Report Card on the Effectiveness of Teacher Training Programs indicates that Lipscomb’s College of Education is one of the most effective teacher preparation programs in the state, consistently producing new teachers who outperform veteran teachers based on value-added scores.

For the third year in a row, Lipscomb University was named to the 2017 Kiplinger Personal Finance list of 100 best values in private universities. Lipscomb continues to invest in innovative programs and attract superior faculty. The core faculty are doctoral-level professors recognized as experts in their fields. Visiting and adjunct professors, with a variety of professional and educational backgrounds, add to the dimension of instruction.

Lipscomb’s College of Pharmacy was the first pharmacy college established in Middle Tennessee, known as the health care capital of the world, thanks to the nearly 400 health care companies that have operations in Nashville and work on a multistate, national and international basis. The college’s Pharmaceutical Sciences Research Center provides student pharmacists with the latest technology and research environments. Thanks to the college’s first research grant from the National Institutes of Health received in the fall of 2014, a more effective anti-cancer drug for breast cancer patients may be made here! The college was listed by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy as one of only ten colleges of pharmacy nationwide to obtain a 100 percent pass rate on the Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination, a standardized exam created by the NABP to assess competency and knowledge of pharmacy law and ethics. In fact, the college has achieved a 100 percent first-attempt pass rate on the MPJE for the past four years.

The College of Business has become one of the fastest-growing graduate business schools in Tennessee. The Master of Business Administration part-time program has been ranked among the 74 best in the nation by Bloomberg Businessweek. The college is the first in Tennessee and the fourth in the nation to achieve specialized accreditation for its accounting program and is one of only 15 percent of business schools in the nation to require a global study and travel experience in order to graduate with a master’s degree. It is also among the top 25 business schools in the nation for veterans.

I could continue with the many accolades bestowed upon Lipscomb and the advances we are making, but more important is that Lipscomb prepares students for success. Beyond instruction in the classroom, students are educated through partnerships with community organizations, local and national businesses, travel abroad programs and engagement in other cultures. Students graduate from Lipscomb confident in their ability to make a difference in an ever-changing and challenging world.

Thank you for considering Lipscomb and for the potential of sharing the coming months with a university recognized as one of the leading educational institutions in the country. We hope you will join us for a life-shaping and life-changing experience.

Best Wishes,

L. Randolph Lowry
President
