2016-2017 Graduate Catalog [ARCHIVED CATALOG]

A Message from the President

Welcome to graduate studies at Lipscomb University, the third largest graduate studies division by enrollment in Nashville. Whether you have just finished your undergraduate degree or are already established in your job, you can take your education to the next level with one of the more than 32 advanced degrees offered at Lipscomb. And for those not looking for a full degree right now, Lipscomb offers more than 20 certificates, licensures and endorsement programs at the graduate level.

U.S. News and World Report’s “2016 America’s Best Colleges” guidebook included Lipscomb among the South’s nine most innovative universities. Over the past ten years, graduate enrollment has grown 647% to 1,650 students, and we have remained current by adding or realigning more than 50 graduate programs in that time period. Lipscomb continues to invest in innovative programs and attract superior faculty. The core faculty are doctoral-level professors recognized as experts in their fields. Visiting and adjunct professors, with a variety of professional and educational backgrounds, add to the dimension of instruction.

The College of Education is annually recognized by national, state and local sources for its teacher preparation program. For the fifth year in a row, data in Tennessee’s Report Card on the Effectiveness of Teacher Training Programs indicates that Lipscomb’s College of Education is one of the most effective teacher preparation programs in the state, consistently producing new teachers who outperform veteran teachers based on value-added scores.

Lipscomb’s College of Pharmacy was the first pharmacy college established in Middle Tennessee-known as the health care capital of the world, thanks to the nearly 400 health care companies that have operations in Nashville and work on a multistate, national and international basis. The college’s new 15,000-square-foot Pharmaceutical Sciences Research Center provides student pharmacists with the latest technology and research environments. Thanks to the college’s first research grant from the National Institutes of Health received in the fall of 2014, a more effective anti-cancer drug for breast cancer patients may be made here! The college was listed by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy as one of only ten colleges of pharmacy nationwide to obtain a 100 percent pass rate in 2015 on the Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination, a standardized exam created by the NABP to assess competency and knowledge of pharmacy law and ethics. In fact, the college has achieved a 100 percent first-attempt pass rate on the MPJE for the past four years.

The College of Business has become one of the fastest-growing graduate business schools in Tennessee. In the last two years, enrollment has increased by 17 percent in its 16 undergraduate and four graduate programs, topping more than 700 students for the first time in university history. It has accrued several significant accomplishments, including a new high-touch and high-tech learning telepresence center and developing a unique Master of Management program that includes an immersive, integrated work experience for recent bachelor’s graduates. The college’s Master of Business Administration program ranked 43 out of the top 74 part-time MBA programs in the nation on the 2015 Bloomberg Businessweek MBA rankings. The college is the first in Tennessee and the fourth in the nation to achieve specialized accreditation for its accounting program and is one of only 15 percent of business schools in the nation to require a global study and travel experience in order to graduate with a master’s degree. It is also among the top 25 business schools in the nation for veterans.

I could continue with the many accolades bestowed upon Lipscomb and the advances we are making, but more important is that Lipscomb prepares students for success. Beyond instruction in the classroom, students are educated through partnerships with community organizations, local and national businesses, travel abroad programs and engagement in other cultures. Students graduate from Lipscomb confident in their ability to make a difference in an ever-changing and challenging world.

Thank you for considering Lipscomb and for the potential of sharing the coming months with a university recognized as one of the leading educational institutions in the country. We hope you will join us for a life-shaping and life-changing experience.

Best Wishes,

L. Randolph Lowry
President
