UBN 2023 - Wealth, Poverty, and the City (3) The course examines the ways in which wealth, poverty, inequality, and economic structures shape and are shaped by cities. The course explores the demographics, definitions, and changes related to poverty, wealth, and class. Students will become familiar with different theories of urban inequality and the ways those theories might be applied to address that inequality. Students will examine how particular policies have exacerbated, alleviated, or attempted to alleviate poverty, and consider evidence related to the effectiveness of poverty policies. The course also examines how economics affect the physical structures of cities, including neighborhoods, infrastructure, and buildings. It will also consider the ways in which those who live in different economic strata experience cities through the lens of economic class. The course places urban economics within the larger context of historical and global forces.
