COUN 5903 - Introduction to Counseling Skills (3) Introduces the development of basic counseling techniques with an introduction to counseling theory, philosophy and principles as applied to skill development. A number of counseling approaches and techniques will be examined for student development, demonstration, and possible integration. The instructor of COUN 5903 will consult with the PRC regarding a student who fails to demonstrate proficiency in this course. Following the review of evidence regarding the student’s deficiencies, the PRC may recommend that the student be given an “in progress” grade and provided with a performance improvement plan which will detail corrective actions necessary for successful completion of this course. Students receiving a “C” or below in the course will be required to repeat the course. A grade of “A” or “B” is required in this course in order to be considered for candidacy status. Candidacy approval is required in order to complete clinical experiences (practicum/internships). Successful completion of clinical experiences is required to be conferred a Master of Science in clinical mental health counseling. Students failing to successfully complete the PIP and/or failing to pass COUN 5903 in the semester immediately following initial registration in this course will be not be allowed to continue in the program. Students dismissed from the program will be provided with encouragement and support in exploring other professions to which they are better suited.
