ICM 6123 - Family Mediation (3)


This course is designed to offer a basic introduction to the concepts of conflict resolution in family settings, specifically in divorce situations. The course includes a review of alternative dispute resolution options and an introduction to the STAR Approach. It includes an exploration of different psychological and communication theories applicable to working in conflict situations. In addition, concepts of distributive and integrative bargaining, both of which are used in creating effective and durable agreements in divorce mediations, are discussed. The requirements of Family Mediation are compared to Civil Mediation and the divorce process in Tennessee, along with a review of applicable statutes and procedures, are highlighted.  Other topics include:  the necessary skills required for working with people in high conflict situations, the needs of children in divorce situations, the process of creating a new family dynamic, the constraints of domestic violence, and the Tennessee Supreme Court Rule 31. Individuals who successfully complete the course may apply for listing as a Rule 31 Family Mediator with the Tennessee Supreme Court Alternative Dispute Resolution Commission.
