Students may opt to finish The Honors College in one of three ways. The Collins Scholar is a freshman-year only experience, designed for those who have highly structured majors with a large number of hours required for graduation (e.g., Education, Engineering, Nursing) and for those who only want a one-year experience before moving on to other parts of their college life. Collins Scholars must complete 9 hours of honors credit and must take an honors sections of Lipscomb Experience. In addition, Collins Scholars must attend a minimum of two major honors events during the Freshman year and have a minimum 3.35 GPA at the end in the first year. Collins Scholars will have a note attached to their transcript and be recognized at the annual awards reception.
Students who wish to continue in honors after the Freshman year can graduate either as an Honors College Scholar (Option 2) or as an Honors College Fellow (Option 3). In either case, a student must complete 21 honors hours and must have at least a cumulative 3.5 GPA in all courses at graduation. Students will indicate their interest in continuing toward the end of the first semester of their Freshman year. Completing requirements for The Honors College does not add any additional hours to a student’s normal course load.

Core Curriculum:
Students may complete the four-year honors college requirements at one of two levels. The Honors College Scholar will complete honors Lipscomb Experience, plus at least six (6) hours selected from listed additional courses and/or by completing honors contracts, totaling a minimum of 21 honors hours. The Honors College Fellow will complete the two remaining courses in the core leading to a senior project, at least 25 honors hours. Students who have a senior project required in their majors can use the honors contract route in that majors course to earn credit for HN 4003, Senior Project. Students who have a publication in a refereed professional journal can use that article as a substitute for the senior project requirement. The Director of The Honors College will meet with those who intend to be Honors College Fellows to determine the best route to finishing the requirements.
Additional Courses for Honors Credit:
Honors sections of the following courses are also available for accumulating credit hours in The Honors College, but they are not required. In non-honors sections of these courses, honors students will earn honors credit via contract.
Additional Requirements:
The Honors College Scholar must make a presentation at the Lipscomb University Student Scholars Symposium or at a state, regional, or national conference.
The Honors College Fellow must complete the additional four hours of course work EITHER to prepare and defend an honors thesis OR to present a creative work OR to complete the SALT Scholar/LIGHT Scholar program. Students who plan to pursue a research-oriented graduate program should seriously consider the thesis option. Students who opt to become a Lipscomb University SALT Scholar/LIGHT Scholar must complete honors requirements in their SALT?LIGHT capstone to qualify as an Honors College Fellow. In addition, The Honors College Fellow must have at least two scholarly presentations either at the Lipscomb University Student Scholars Symposium or at a state, regional, or national academic conference.
Students who complete The Honors College requirements will receive recognition on their transcript and in the commencement program at graduation. They will also receive a stole to wear at the graduation ceremony.
