The English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Program at Lipscomb University is an intensive English program to support speakers of other languages with the development of academic English language skills through specialized, non-credit bearing courses. It is a full-time, non-degree, certificate program that allows students to improve academic English for the purposes of entering a degree program. Conditional admission is granted to Lipscomb University through the EAP program to allow students to fully participate in student life while studying English.

The program is approved by the Student and Visa Exchange Program (SEVP). Lipscomb University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award associate, baccalaureate, masters, and doctoral degrees, of which the intensive English program is included. The program is operated and governed by the College of Education.

Students are considered full-time based on 20-24 clock hours per week. Each 16-week semester will consist of the following:

  • 12 hours of non-degree credit per semester
    • 20 hours EAP class time per week
    • 4 Service/Culture hours per week outside class (2 hours chapel, 2 hours culture/conversation activities)

To qualify for the program, students must score within the following ranges on an English language proficiency exam:

TOEFL: 50-78 (iBT), 143-210 (computer-based test), 463-547 (paper-based test)

IELTS: 5.0-6.0

To complete the EAP Program, students must maintain a grade of “C” in all their courses and receive a qualifying TOEFL or IELTS score whilst maintaining a course load of 12 hours for at least one semester. A certificate from the university will be issued indicating successful completion of the program at the end of the term in which the requirements of the program have been met. Students who successfully complete the program’s requirements are granted full admission to the university (see International Students). If a student does not meet these requirements within four semesters or 48 load hours, whichever comes first, students will be terminated from the program, with no certificate issued. The program adheres to the university’s Academic Probation and Suspension Policy (See Academic Probation).

To apply, students must submit an international student application and meet the admission requirements for the EAP Program. More information about the EAP Program can be found by e-mailing eap@lipscomb.edu or by visting LearnEnglish.lipscomb.edu.
