ED 3273 - Methods of Teaching Science and Social Studies (3) F


This course addresses the learning of content and pedagogical knowledge in lesson planning, classroom practices, and materials needed to effectively teach science and history/social science in the elementary classroom. Candidates will learn to support students in thinking like scientists as they formulate questions about natural phenomena, create scientific models, collect, analyze and interpret data, support explanations with evidence, communicate findings and connect to mathematical concepts.  Candidates will learn to support students in thinking like historians as they search for patterns in events, find evidence, debate and think deeply about social issues through critical thinking, problem-solving, research and analysis of information. Throughout the course, candidates will design and implement effective learning activities and assessments in social studies and science using a variety of teaching methods. They will also incorporate content-area reading and integrated literacy strategies across both disciplines. 

Prerequisite: Admission to the program.
