Lipscomb is the first college among the Christian colleges in the Southeast to house a Dietetic Internship (DI) Program that is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND). The internship program began in 2002 and is a post-baccalaureate, supervised practice program. Interns complete more than 1,000 hours of supervised practice, including a 12-hour graduate certificate. Eligibility for the DI requires a verification statement from an accredited dietetics program. Interns complete weekly rotations in a wide variety of settings, including clinical, community, corporate, sports nutrition, and food service areas of dietetics. Upon completion of the internship, students are eligible to write the Registration Examination for Dietitians.  The three year average for Lipscomb’s dietetic internship one-year pass rate is 96%.

A dietetic internship is a program designed for individuals who have completed one of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics accredited undergraduate or certificate nutrition programs. Under the supervision of dietitians in the field, Lipscomb interns complete a minimum of 1000 hours of practice as well as additional coursework, beginning in early August until mid-May. Areas of practice include clinical, outpatient, community, wellness, sports nutrition, research and food service operations of dietetics. The Lipscomb dietetic internship offers three concentration experiences: Medical Nutrition Therapy, Sports Nutrition, or Health Promotion and Wellness. Upon completion of the program, interns are expected to have developed the skills necessary to become entry-level dietitians.

Program Mission

The Dietetic Internship (DI) Program at Lipscomb University is positioned to provide supervised practice and didactic learning experiences to educate students to successfully function as entry-level generalist dietitians in the state, region, and nation. The curriculum is designed to provide for achievement of the competencies established for entry-level dietitians through excellence in both the classroom and supervised practice settings, encouragement of community service, and commitment to the Code of Ethics of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Program Goals:

  1. To prepare graduates to serve competently as entry-level dietitians;
  2. To encourage, motivate, and support interns to complete the internship program
  3. To prepare graduates to demonstrate a commitment to service (faith-based organizations, professional organizations, food banks, non-profits, mentoring, etc.)
