ED 3613 - Math Methods 1: K-3 (3) F, SP


his course will create proficiency in principles of learning and teaching foundational mathematics to diverse populations of K-3 elementary students.  Teacher candidates will examine research-based teaching methods to develop student conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, AND mathematical reasoning or problem-solving skills.  Candidates will learn how to use high-quality instructional materials as well as prepare instructional materials, assessments, and create laboratory experiences that relate principles to practice.  Candidates will be introduced to the Tennessee Academic Mathematics Standards, the Standards for Mathematical Practice, and NCTM Effective Mathematics Teaching Practices. The rationale for this course is to focus on teaching early numeracy and number sense for K-3 students.

Prerequisite: Admission to the program.
