ED 3633 - Math Methods 2: 4-8 (3) This course will create proficiency in principles of learning and teaching foundational mathematics to diverse populations of 4-8 elementary and middle grades students. Teacher candidates will examine high-quality instructional materials and engage in research-based teaching methods to build 4-8 students’ conceptual understanding and procedural fluency as well as increase mathematical reasoning and/or problem-solving skills. The purpose of this course is to equip candidates with a working knowledge of the use of high-quality instructional materials and research-based teaching strategies and how to implement those strategies most effectively in the mathematics classroom. Candidates will be introduced to the 4-8 Tennessee Academic Mathematics Standards. In addition, this course will focus on teaching algebraic thinking, geometry, measurement, statistics, and probability.
