ED 4713 - Clinical Experience Lab II: Teaching, Learning & Assessment

In Clinical Experience Lab II, teacher candidates focus on research-based teaching strategies and principles of learning.  Given the increasing diversity of classrooms, it is critical that teachers are capable of designing quality lessons that engage all learners.  The purpose of this course is to equip teacher candidates with a working knowledge of research-based teaching strategies and the discernment of when and how to implement those strategies most effectively (TN Literacy Standard 1, 2, 3, 4) . Candidates collaborate with a peer to research and create a presentation about a research-based strategy connecting theory to practice.

Assignments focus on both short and long term instructional planning that incorporates formative and summative assessment and modifications to maximize student learning.  Candidates create a 5-lesson learning segment/unit of study based on design principles (TN Literacy Standards 1, 2, 3, 4)  that will be taught during their field experience (55-60 hours) (TN Literacy Standard 5).  Additionally, candidates demonstrate the ability to differentiate instruction, interpret data in order to make sound curricular choices, and practice active reflection.  Attention is given to adapting lessons for students with diverse needs and students for whom English is a second language.
